Disclaimer & Safety Notice for Weighted Capes
Weighted capes are designed to provide calming input and promote comfort, particularly for neurodivergent children. However, these items are not medical devices and should not be used as a substitute for occupational therapy or professional sensory evaluation.
Appropriate weight must always be used—the weight of a cape should not exceed 5–10% of the child’s body weight. Capes should never be forced on a child and must be removed immediately upon request. Use is entirely optional and based on the child’s comfort and tolerance. Children should be observed closely for any signs of discomfort, overheating, or distress, and capes should not be used for longer than 30 minutes at a time.
Hair professionals should always obtain consent from a parent or guardian before introducing or using a weighted cape on a child. Refer to our "Parent Consent Form" here
Improper or prolonged use can pose safety risks, including overheating, restricted movement, or physical discomfort—especially in children with medical conditions such as low muscle tone, respiratory issues, or circulatory disorders. We strongly encourage caregivers to consult with a licensed occupational therapist if they have any concerns about their child’s sensory needs or the use of weighted items.
